The ASL Redox Simulator models the redox state of airway surface liquid (ASL) in normal and cystic fibrosis (CF) airways that are not inflamed or infected — that is, changes associated with primary defects in CFTR rather than ensuing neutrophilic inflammation. The simulator considers the major elements that regulate ASL redox status: H₂O₂ generation by dual oxidase (DUOX/NADPH oxidase) on the airway epithelial surface, and the liquid-phase components known to consume peroxide. These include formation of hypothiocyanite (OSCN⁻) by lactoperoxidase (LPO) and the downstream reactions of H₂O₂ and OSCN⁻ with the major sulfhydryl-containing molecules — glutathione (GSH/GSSG), mucins, and albumin.
